Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
National identity refers to the collective sense of belonging, pride, and identification with a nation. In the age of digital media, the shaping and reinforcement of national identity have evolved through the proliferation of online platforms and social media. In Bida Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, digital media is increasingly used to foster discussions on cultural values, national symbols, and historical narratives that contribute to a shared sense of national identity. Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become spaces where citizens express their views on national issues, celebrate national achievements, and critique governmental actions. This study aims to investigate how digital media influences the shaping of national identity in Bida, particularly focusing on how local people use these platforms to interact with national narratives, political events, and cultural representations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of digital media in Nigeria, there is limited research on its role in shaping national identity at the local level. While national events and policies are increasingly discussed on social media, it is unclear how these discussions contribute to a collective national identity in smaller, localized communities such as Bida. This study aims to explore how residents of Bida LGA use digital media to engage with national identity and whether these platforms reinforce or challenge traditional forms of national belonging.
